With the threat of lack of employment, problems related to food, conflicts, exoduses and desertification, the third challenge is how to ensure that these efforts are developed and promote sustainability, both in the countryside and throughout the economy. There are several factors behind these poor harvests. Many African farmers lack the basic things that many farmers outside the region take for granted, such as access to better crop varieties, fertilizers and irrigation. While some progress has been made, addressing these weaknesses alone is not enough.
